Financial Representatives and Clients Enjoy Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club


On Sep 15th, 20 teams of 4 gathered at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club for Northwestern Mutual Portland’s Client Appreciation Golf Tournament. Despite a little Oregon rain near the end of the day, teams of Financial Representatives and their clients competed valiantly for the winning spot, which was finally claimed by a team led by wealth management advisor Keith Dragoo.  Jeremy Monlux, the event coordinator, said: “I think it is great that our financial reps were able to spend a day on the course with their clients. We're looking forward to doing an event like this again in the future.” The tournament also included lunch and a presentation by Frank Pape, Consulting Director for Russell Investments.  Northwestern Mutual Portland would like to express our sincere gratitude to Russell Investments, who sponsored lunch, as well Strategic Employee Benefit Services (SEBS), the event cart sponsor, and Financial representative Gay Davis, who secured the event venue.

Women in Insurance and Financial Services Board Welcomes Maia Chase

Maia Chase, Associate Financial Representative at Northwestern Mutual Portland, has been nominated to the national board of directors for Women in Insurance and Financial Services (WIFS). Maia serves currently as secretary and marketing chair on the WIFS Portland Metro Board and says she is excited to become involved at the national level. As their national website ( explains, WIFS is “dedicated to attracting capable women to the financial services sector, helping them develop their talents and advancing them toward their fullest potential.” Many in the Northwestern Mutual Portland community have opted for membership to WIFS, including managing partner Cory Mahaffey, along with Katy Beckman, Sharon Gerlach, Ivory Hartman, Nancy Kelly, Erica Knutson, Michelle Kreis, Katie Lee, Stacie Moenning and Taryn Stastny. As an agency, Northwestern Mutual Portland is committed to supporting the efforts of the local WIFS chapter, and has been recognized as a WIFS Portland Metro “Silver Level Sponsor.” For information on WIFS Portland Metro, and a list of upcoming local events, visit


Managing Partner Recognized by NAIFA

Cory Mahaffey, managing partner of Northwestern Mutual Portland, was recognized by the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) with the 2010 Manager’s Membership Award. Citing “commitment and continued support of the insurance and financial services industry,” NAIFA thanked Cory for his “dedication to strengthening the financial services industry through adhering to a strict code of ethics and supporting continuing education courses to improve [his] advisors’ professional careers.” Cory’s achievement is listed on the NAIFA national website ( and will be recognized at NAIFA’s 2010 Convention and Career Conference. 




Champions with a Cause

On Saturday, August 7th, a team of men and women from the Northwestern Mutual Portland Network Office competed in the 3rd Annual Serenity Hospice Softball Tournament for Charity in Tualatin, Oregon. Of the 14 teams in attendance, NMFN Portland emerged victorious after an all-day double-elimination tournament which lasted from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. 
The all-star players triumphed in the grueling competition with support from a loyal cheering section made up of friends and colleagues from the NM Portland Office. Financial Rep Mark Grbavac (previously of National Champions Oregon State Beavers Baseball) earned notoriety as he hit the only home run to soar all the way out of the park! 
The winning team was recognized with a trophy that will be proudly displayed in the NM Portland office. All proceeds from entry fees as well as run-by-run “score tax” contributions were donated to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk and Disabled American Veterans.
